Solera Cafe & Wine Bar

Well I finally got to try a new place in town that I had been wanting to get to. Solera Cafe located on Richwood Ave. is a very different place for Morgantown. You definitely have to be open to trying new types of food. The menu is very seasonal, therefore, what you get in June may not be the same in December. We sat outside on the deck which overlooked Morgantown. I could see the old house I lived in when I was young on Brockway Ave. It really was a nice setting. 

We were there Wednesday night. There was a group of 6 of us and what was nice is I got to sample many different items. We ordered 5 different appetizers and we all got different main courses. Everything we ordered was very good. The appetizer I ordered was Carpacho de Beuy y Tomate (chilled filet and heirloom tomatoes with citrus chili oil). The filet was perfectly cooked to medium rare and just melted in your mouth. I was a little worried about it being served chilled but that didn’t make a difference. This was hands down my favorite of all the appetizers we had, but nothing was bad. The Gazpacho Cereza (chilled cherry and cucumber soup with fresh mint) was very refreshing.

For dinner I ordered the Yucatan Rubbed Loin Steak with an avocado butter. WOW! That truly is all I can say about this steak. It may have been the best steak I have ever eaten. The avocado butter on top was unbelievable. I never would’ve thought about something like that on top of a steak but, man did it work. It was cooked so perfectly I could cut it with my fork. It was served on top of some grilled squash that was very tasty. In our group we had duck, trout, stir fry, marlin and flank steak. Everything was very good, some better than others but I really don’t think you would be disappointed in any of them. My mom got the trout which was served on top of saffron rice. The trout was good but I couldn’t stop eating her rice. It was so perfectly cooked and tasty.

Solera Cafe is a higher-end restaurant. Plan a special occassion and check them out. It is a very welcome change for those of us that don’t want the same old cookie cutter foods all the time. It is time we got a more diversified menu in this area. We can only hope that this little gem sticks around for a long time to come. I really don’t think you will be disappointed. Don’t be afraid to try something different either. There are some other very good foods from other countries out there and you owe it to yourself to give them a try.
